Over the past year, I've had a few friends ask for itinerary recommendations in Jordan so I thought it'd be helpful for others (and myself) to compile it all in one place. So here it is, my suggested itinerary for 7 days in Jordan with some add-ons for extra time.
Day 1: Arrive in Amman, go to Jafra Downtown for mezze and bolo (lemonade with mint)
Day 2: Stay in Amman and explore the citadel, ampitheater, downtown souks for souvenirs, and the two oldest neighborhoods (Weibdeh and Jebal Amman aka. Rainbow Street)
Day 3: Hire a driver to go to Madaba, Mt. Nebo, and the Dead Sea
Day 4: Hire a drive to go up north (Um Qays, Jerash, and Ajlun Castle)
Day 5: Hop onto an early morning Jett Bus (6AM) and drive down to Petra (arrive 10:30AM). Buy a two day pass and see all the main sites on the first day -- make sure to hike up to the Treasury at the end!
Day 6: Get up early morning and do a hike (I like the hike to the high altar of the sacrifice) when you'll have Petra all to yourself (before the Jett and tourist buses arrive!). In the afternoon, hire a taxi to drive you to Wadi Rum (should be about 30JD) and do some 4x4 exploration in the late afternoon, followed by an overnight stay in a camp.
Day 7: Take the Jett bus back to Amman (4 hours) and get mansaf at Al-Quds downtown or mezze at Sufra on Rainbow St.
Extra: Head to Aqaba from Wadi Rum (arrange taxi through your camp or take a bus--it's only an hour away). Then head back the next morning on the Jett bus to Amman.
Extra: Hike Wadi Mujib if you have a day just in case you have to wait around (it's a popular place).
