On Sunday, we left Beirut for the Bekaa Valley in search of wine, Roman ruins, and Alina's hometown. Our first stop (at 9:30 am) was the oldest winery in Lebanon (okay, there are only two), Chateau Ksara, founded in 1857 by Jesuit fathers who used the land for farming and wine. The most interesting part of the tour (aside from wine tasting) was the caves under the main building that are used to store the casks. These caves date to the Roman times and were discovered by one of the Jesuit fathers. It was a nice twist of fate that the Jesuits were using the land to produce wine, and soon after they discovered instant cellars to store their wine. I was intrigued by the old wine bottles in the cellars dating back to the early 1900s that were cemented together by years of dirt. Needless to say, I took many pictures!
